“To dare greatly into uncertainty is the most accurate measure of courage we have” – Brene Brown
The general consensus is that vulnerability is synonymous with weakness, and being imperfect means being flawed. We think we are not worthy of connection and belonging. “Belonging is the innate human need to be a part of something larger than us; we are hardwired for it” Our imperfections are not failings but rather they are what relate us and the better we understand that the more we can practice empathy towards others. What I explore is how vulnerability is courageous and how shame and empathy link with this idea. My work causes a reaction within the audience whether to choose to exercise empathy or to reject the art. Either way they choose, it challenges the viewer to think about how they deal with their own vulnerabilities and how they handle others.
